Apparently, yesterday was “Britney Spears Day” here in San Francisco.
I know this because when I opened our second-story window and shouted down a greeting to Scary Larry the homeless guy, he looked up and said, “Hey Bud! Happy Britney Spears Day!”
This was all prompted by her giving a free concert at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium at noon on Sunday to promote her new album, “Femme Fatale,” that goes on sale Tuesday. Parts of the concert will air on “Good Morning America” on Tuesday morning.
It probably goes without saying that I’m not in Britney’s target demographic. I’m not even sure what that would be but it’s fairly certain that over 50, male and straight don’t factor in. But I remember when she first hit the scene and how enthralled our 8-y/o neighbor, Emily, was with her.
Emily had to have everything Britney put out, which was not only music (on cds!) but posters and bling, which all got off-loaded in one of her mom’s frequent garage sales when she hit her teens and discovered Nirvana. Kurt Cobain posthumously talked her out of her Britney-esqe ways and the last time I talked to her – a few years ago – she was WAY too cool for Britney.
But yesterday, thousands of people showed up who were not too cool to stand in line for hours to get into a 15-minute Britney concert. Three songs. Yep, that was it.
I was tempted to snag one of those tickets, only because they were free and the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium is right over there on the corner, across from the Civic Center Market. I may have had to stand in line for a long time but it would have been a five-minute walk to get there.
It would be just to say that I’d done it, and had actually seen this mega-star in action, fan or not, but then I figured that that’s one seat I’d be taking away from a true fan, which would really be kind of shitty of me.
So I’ll just have to settle for the blinged-out Britney iPad when I win it. There was a contest on Vevo a couple of days ago, where you enter to win an iPad with every song Britney’s ever recorded, including the new album being released on Tuesday. They said it’s pink and blinged-out with all kinds of Britney shit.
Hey, a free iPad! So I entered the contest.
But I’d probably just sell it and get a regular iPad or something. I’m sure a blinged-out Britney iPad with every song she ever recorded must be worth a small fortune to someone out there, judging by how many knuckleheads stood in that line for hours and came from all over including Europe.
Yes.. EUROPE. For a free mini-concert.
But then again, perhaps it will inspire me if I compose posts for this blog on a pink, blinged-out Britney iPad while listening to “Oops!.. I did it again!” on an endless loop.
I may even sit on a throne and hire sexy male back-up dancers to swirl around me as I write. I’ll be “Rhodester Fatale!”
Rhodester Fatale!
