Precariously Pounding The Pavement

December 5, 2008

in Humor/Satire

Coffeesister and I are officially victims of the recession.

Wednesday, I was laid off.

It was kind of cool that for once, it wasn’t something that I’d done.

I didn’t make off with a trunk full of office supplies, drink a six pack of beer an hour before shift or say something stupid to the Boss’ daughter.

They called me in and told me what a fine job I’ve been doing.  They told me what an asset I’ve been to the place and how much they’re going to miss me.  But unfortunately, they can’t afford to keep me on any longer.

The boss even broke down and cried.  He was THAT sorry!  He said he’d give me recommendations, pointing me in the right direction.  Since then he’s called me with the names and phone numbers of several other bosses in town who are in the same business he’s in, which is the hotel business here in Palm Springs.

Now, I’m thinking that if business was down at the hotel I DID work at, wouldn’t it also be down at these other ones?  Of course, one of them is a start-up that’s under construction.  But still, I don’t see them getting inundated with tourism anytime soon after they open.

It’s awful here.

The hotel I worked at in Palm Springs. Business is down slightly.

Seriously, NOBODY is visiting Palm Springs.  It’s like a ghost town, with tumbleweeds blowing down the street and the occasional riderless horse wandering through.

I walked into the local saloon and ordered a whiskey — the bartender woke up, blew a half inch of dust off the glass and poured me a shot.  Slim Pickens was over at a corner table — he invited me to a friendly card game.

Monday I’ll be out pounding the pavement, but I’m taking the weekend off to sort things out.

Love the TWEET that popped up from CNN as I was typng that last sentence..

@cnnbrk U.S. employers cut 533,000 jobs in November — the most in 34 years — as unemployment rate rose to 6.7 percent.

HAHAHA!

Fuck.

Such tough times, Dave. At least, you have the love of a good woman to fall back on not to mention some formidable writing skills. Take care, brother. I’ll be thinking about you guys and keeping an eye out.

Well now that you have so much more time on your hands, we really should have a cup of coffee together and see what we can come up with. Let’s hope that things pick up soon.

Sounds good, Dave. I WAS going to invite you and Steve to the Hilton for dinner, but regretfully, that chance has passed.

I live within close proximity to the Coco’s on Palm Canyon next to the new shopping center, which is also a short walk from the new Koffi (sic?) down by the upcoming Ace Hotel. Either would be a great place to meet for that coffee. or Koffi? hehe.

Name a time.

Damn, there goes the cushy hotel I was going to stay at.

Stinky news, indeed. You’ve got your brilliant writing skills– put that to work. :)

Hugs.

MCF, considering what we went through a year or so ago, it really does kind of suck, you know?

Serious bummer! But as you said in your eulogy post, maybe it’s time to “do something” with the blog…

Hmmm I wonder if the new Riviera is pulling much away? I’ve had a few friends visiting town lately who happened to all stay at the Riv.

Alex – True, but I can hardly do anything in time to make next month’s rent.

Rick (PSS) – To think that I was going to apply there during their hiring phase, but held off because “I already HAVE a job.” I wonder if the mega-pet supply store next door to me is hiring? Too bad I don’t know anyone with that company who would provide a good reference ;-)

Yes, that is a huge challenge – good luck with the search and I hope you find something soon without suffering hardship!

How did I miss the layoff news? So sorry. I hope all the pavement pounding gets you back in a job soon. What kind of job are you looking for, other than “anything with a salary”?

I’ve worked security off and on over the years, but don’t care for it. That’s hard to answer. I’m thinking of making a BIG plunge into freelancing (writing) this weekend. Planning a next post along those lines.
