I forgot to mention that Pete divorced Laurie - who he had known well before getting married - after three miserable years of matrimony. Nothing is black-and-white in this world.

Chip! You have managed to destroy my literary license in one, masterful stroke! Blew it to smithereens! But that's okay, the essence of the whole idea is still intact. You're forgiven :-)

I remember that a mutual friend of ours, ol' Pete, was the biggest scoffer. "Chip's crazy!" he said. "It will never last, I give it six months. You just can't marry someone you don't know well. You need to spend at least a year being friends, and then at least a year being engaged."

I'd love to see the look on his face today, especially when you tell him about the daughter married to the Alaskan fishing-boat captain and the grandbaby on the way. Congratulations!

BTW, it pales in comparison to your story, but I didn't really know Dorian all that long before becoming engaged, and then we had a short engagement. Been married 20 years now. Phhht on sour-puss Pete.

Thanks for getting in touch - awesome to hear from you after all these years! Tell Joanie hi and hi to the "kids" from "uncle Dave," haha!

This is Chip, the spouse of Joannie and yes I can verify the RhodesTer's account with a few minor corrections:
Joannie contacted me first while I was on Adak. Letter received after my 25th birthday in the middle of a snowstorm.
I proposed to her sight unseen over the phone after a month and a half of postal correspondence. It was the first time I talked to her and the conversation went some thing like this... 10:30PM my time, 2:20 AM her time... and she was wide awake when I called, and she was in Washington D. C. (Of course this is the abridged version):
   J: Hello?
   C: Hello, Joannie?
   J: Yes?
   C: This is Chip.
    J: Yes.
C: Joannie, I really believe you're the woman God would have for me to marry.
    J: Well, I believe you're right.
Done deal. A month later we sent pictures. Another month later we arrived on Oahu, saw each other face-to-face for the first, shook hands, and had one week before our wedding. We of course honeymooned for one week on Kauai. It was blissful.
We've now been married for 22 years, have 3 living children and our oldest daughter is married to an Alaskan Fishing boat captain and due to have her first child this October.
And yes, people thought I was crazy then and can't believe me now, but I can attest the event did indeed happen.

LOL...no need to chill! I just wasn`t sure how much of it you were serious about. The sarcastic undertone sometimes doesn`t translate too well to the written word...at least not for me....not my native language. So allow me to ask a stupid question or two every once in a while and please don`t get offended by them. Just trying to clear things up.
I love your blog and am follow your interesting and mostly hilariously funny twits...thanx for sharing...Please, I meant no offense???

Give my best to CofFeesister and stay just the way you are...everythinG else would be even more boring that!!

It is a hell of a love and life story for shure...that much I'll have to admit!

No, you're right. It's scary and disturbing. Except for the Chip and Joanie part which really happened and they've been married for like 25 years now and I just think that's really cool.

Have a gurkin with a shot of vodka, and chill for a bit.
